Re: Michael and Loco's thread about other things...

Then it was that mode X the one I used to make my 3D engine...

About DES being grouped or not, I'll be sincere, I just can't recall what "grouped" means... If I'm not mistaken it has to do with the key-space and some keys being closely related to others, but I just can't remember. It's been a long time since I don't do anything with this subject, and I haven't dug deep into the mathematics behind cryptography except to understand what's behind the scenes, but never to apply it in practice, so I have forgotten some details... I even have a bad time trying to remember to which of the cryptanalysis methods DES is more vulnerable: differential or linear, I guess it is linear...

Refresh my memory please. :)

Re: Michael and Loco's thread about other things...

I just meant that it was once suspected that the application of DES to data would give results clustered within a specific subset of the expected / possible population...  giving a many to one relationship between the encrypted data and workable keys...

Simply interpreted, the end result would be that no matter how many times DES was applied to data,  the encoded data could then be decrypted with a single DES iteration and a key that may or may not have been part of the original set of keys used in encoding...

Of course, it was finally proven that this was NOT the case...  and that while there is degredation and some grouping / clustering which occurs ~ which is why 3DES != to using 168 bit key...  multiple encodings does provide additional protection...

Hmmm, thats still not really 100% correct...  but it (I hope) gets the idea across... :?

As for specific vulnerabilities ~ best methods against specific crypto algorithms...  no clue...  Its been far too long since I've worked on any of this...!

Michael

P.S.  I thought this was our stupid employers / employees thread!!! lol :-P

Re: Michael and Loco's thread about other things...

I just got back home and found lots of messages  (email AND  phone) begging me to remove this msg - I figure a half day of it being posted was torture enough.

I'm still going to put him to work when he visits though.

At least I'm not getting my modem / internet connection disconnected on me!

Re: Michael and Loco's thread about other things...

Not certain... I did my post and shut off the monitor BEFORE the post completed...  when I came back I saw all those...  its almost like the entire http transaction repeated itself a bunch of times...

Ah well.... just another of those mysteries...

Re: Michael and Loco's thread about other things...

No interesting stories the past week or two...

Really kinda odd... I have gone on 5 interviews...  the people were very nice (reading this stuff maybe?! ;-) )...  all of the interviews lasted much longer than they were supposed to (all were supposed to be 1/2 ~ 1 hour... all lasted more than 2 hours)...

But...

While ALL of them have called me back... and asked about doing contracting on the "more technical aspects of projects"...  none have offered a permanent job...  and all the "technical apsects of projects" look like they are months away i.e. "We can't figure this out, can you help us?" type deals...  Maybe I shouldn't have suggested applying derivates of Djikstra's map algorithms to tracking web site optimization in that interview the other week... silly me...  we all know its much much better to do something like keeping a f'ing flat database of hits and let an idiot eyeball them and make decisions based on "intuition"... :-/

Argh.

We are now at 7 weeks... and probably (lost count) at least 30 interviews...  very sad... so very very sad...

I've decided to turn over a new leaf...  I've been going to interviews in my best suit...  getting it cleaned and pressed literally each time... something I haven't done in YEARS...  Heck, I've worn them ALL more in the past two months than the entire time I have owned them!  Its back to jeans... t-shirts...   things that I am comfortable in...

Also... no more holding back...  if I get an interviewer who purposely starts going out of the job requirements to try to trip me up... I am gonna call him / her on it right there... and tell them to take a flying leap if they don't like it...  Hell, maybe a nice solid side kick in their head (assuming they will be sitting) will set them straight... lol...

On the plus side... my old company asked me back if they get funding (ok, I kinda helped start it so not surprising)... and do have a "name" leading it now (can't say who)... so all is not lost... yet...

Lol...

Michael

and a complete Fuck You attitude...

Re: Michael and Loco's thread about other things...

Ah, all that was about a friend of mine's kid...  that I'm sorta "big brother" to... he doesn't have one and I don't have a little brother so we kinda adopted each other...   thats the really short version... lol.

Anyway, I erased the post that would have helped make sense of the "lesbian" posts...  don't worry though, you didn't miss anything....

On another note (and cause I am CERTAIN he will read this because I know he likes to looking through the history list etc. on my browsers...)...

He is here for a couple of days...  he starts back to school in a bit and I promised he could visit...  so I have a small apartment...  gave him the bed...  I took the couch...  and I couldn't get to sleep...  so I went and rolled him over in the bed (its a BIG bed, not a single) figuring I would be able to lay down there...  All I gotta say...if has anyone ever had (or had a friend that had) a St. Bernard (dog) they would sympathize...  I swear, its like a slobber / drool farm on the entire top 1/3 of the sheets... not just his pillow... but also the SHEETS... so I guess its back to the couch for me... or lotsa typing... probably the typing since I am now wide awake (I did lay down for a second before being accosted by a puddle of drool ~ which scared me horribly!)...

Ah well... tomorrow is the rest of his "punishment" (yeah, if you didn't read the other msg before it was erased, you don't know)...  today we took  a bunch of the retired etc.  folks who live in the apt building shopping and out around town...  actually spent about 6 or 7 hours at it all told...   and tomorrow  / monday is a holiday here... so I've got a bunch of food that we've fixed up and we've hijacked some outdoor grills (well, 2) and we're spending the day doing a cookout / bbq with them... me supervising and him working...

Still...  I don't think I am very good at the strict older brother bit... he kept telling them we were brothers today... so they (the folks we helped out) were doing the "you're even nicer than your brother" bit all day...  and kept saying they wished they had grandchildren like him... and so on and so on...

...and the end result is...  he seems to be enjoying himself way TOO MUCH...   this big" punishment" of mine will probably end up being material for his first week english "What I did for summer vacation" essay...

..and maybe I should taken Rob's advice and just forced him to watch lesbian porn or whatever after all...

Lol.

Michael

PS.  So ends Michael's person diary (lol)  entry for August... :-P

Re: Michael and Loco's thread about other things...

Just a quick note...  for anyone sending emails / msgs relating to the site...

I will be "out of the office"  starting tomorrow (Sept 13) through approximately the 23rd of the month...  I will be trying to check posts / personal messages during this time but if it takes a while to respond, don't despair... I shall return!  Better yet... email Rob instead... he loves getting email questions even more than I do!!!!  lol...

Btw, I'll be at (just attending) the Sun Network Conference (I think thats the proper "name") at the Moscone Cntr in SF (18th ~ 20th)  so if anyone else is going to be there...  drop a line...  meet the "cranky old bastard" in person...  or if you are attending and want a ride and live near I-80 (from W NY border on) anywhere I'll have plenty of room on the luggage rack!  lol.

Michael

Re: Michael and Loco's thread about other things...

Figure this is as good of a place to post this as anywhere else... besides, I've posted it in other places...

Without getting into the sordid details, a friend of mine died and the U.S. Army / military took care of the burial etc. ...  unfortunately, I do not know WHERE they buried him... no one else seems to know (don't ask)...  and I am trying to find out...

So if anyone out there happens to know how to look something like this up... who the appropriate people to contact are for the info... etc. ...  any help would be appreciated...

I'll even promise only to say nice things about you (if you help me) for at least a week on the forums ;-)

Thanks,

Michael
