Re: Server problems?

I'm guessing the restore still isn't quite right, since now things seem to be even
further back than before, and our previous threads here about the problems seem
gone as well...

Maybe best to disable registration and posting until things settle down, and put some
message on the front page telling everyone what's up?

Re: Server problems?

To me it looks to be about the same as before. There was a two week gap, but that was a week ago. Now it's a three week gap.

vic said he'd restore the salvaged database from the broken disk, but I suspect that that database wasn't complete, so he restored the backup again, losing our (only) new thread along the process.

Re: Server problems?

I thought it was a day older, because I could've sworn the newest post was marked
March 25th, but now it shows as March 24th, despite still claiming to be last edited
on the 25th...  So, maybe my memory is just faulty about thinking it ever showed as
the 25th on the front page... *shrug*  Whatever, not a big deal either way...

Bummer, if the salvaged DB didn't work out...  It would've been nice to have back
some of the lost posts...  But, oh well...

Re: Server problems?

It is the strangest thing.  The recovered MySQL files say April 4th on their time stamp.  I shut these forums down, copy the files over, re-run the upgrade procedure and we're back where we started with old posts and nothing new.  MySQL says there's nothing wrong with the files.  I've got a head cold that makes me feel both drunk and hung over while sneezing and coughing, so maybe I'm just repeatedly doing something really stupid.  I know I'm copying into the right place because our posts about the server problem go away, and the upgrade process re-runs.  I guess I've just lost my mind.

Re: Server problems?

Wasn't there a quiet period a few weeks ago, with a sudden burst of renewed activity later on? That would explain why nothing changed between the databases, as the changes happened slightly later than 4 April? (Could compare the list of registered users to find out I suppose, if that's possible without changing the current DB again.)

Re: Server problems?

Hmmm, I may have found the reason the place has been dead quiet since coming
back: biologz reports that he's unable to post at all in the forums, for some unknown
reason...  I looked around in the admin settings, but I can't spot anything that would
disable posting to non-admins (because, obviously WE are able to post, at least)...
Anyone know what might be causing it?  He didn't report any error or anything, but
just said: "it seems that i can't post anything. When i try, it loads the page and then
just stops before finishing it..."...  I'm not entirely clear what he means, but I'm guessing
he means the normal posting/editing page isn't loading?  Not sure why it wouldn't
just for non-admins, though...  (Or, maybe it's just him...  But, it sure does seem
strange that no one else has posted anything at all since we've returned...)

Re: Server problems?

All right, it seems it was the AkSpam Filter Post plugin. I've disabled it, and now it seems to work again. But I've made tiny changes here and there in the settings too, so it's not entirely sure, just the most obvious cause. It didn't give problems before. :-(

Happy posting people...

Re: Server problems?

Sorry I haven't checked back in guys, I've been going nuts getting caught back up on everything else since the crash.  If you liked the spam thing I can have a go at putting it back into place again when I have a few cycles.

Re: Server problems?

I'm not sure if that spam plug-in ever actually managed to catch any real spam,
anyway...  I certainly never noticed any...  Does it soft-delete it, so us admins would
still see it?  Every deleted spam I've ever seen has been by another real admin...
I think the real change that stopped most of the spam before was the improved
captcha stuff for registration...

Re: Server problems?

Yes, that new captcha, with the current settings, is even hard for humans to get right. ;-)

At least I needed to refresh the image when making the test account, as I only counted 4 of the 6 chars or something, and didn't dare to guess what that strange curve was supposed to be.

Re: Server problems?

Well that migration went about as badly as it could have.  Anyway, we're now on the fancy new mega-IBM server with the fancy SAN for storage.  Sorry for all the down time!

Re: Server problems?

Rob is on vacation, so you couldn't have it planned better.

And it's blazingly fast now! That's worth much more than any nuisance. Thank you vic.
