Re: Gone for a couple weeks...

FYI, folks, I'm going to be offline for the next week or two...  (I'm
going to be stuck in the back woods of NH... ;-/)  So, it'll be up to
the rest of you guys (Loco, Michael (if he hasn't disappeared again
already! ;-)), Nope, i3839, Uzume (we should make you 3 admins,
I think, since you answer as many questions as we do! ;-)), and
everyone else) to keep questions answered...  See you in a while!

Re: Gone for a couple weeks...

Have a nice vacation (if that's what being stuck in the back woods of NH means anyway).

May you encounter Michael there, please bring him back here.

Have fun!

Re: Gone for a couple weeks...

I'm back! ;-)

Well, no danger of connecting from there, since there was no
functioning computer with a Net connection available anywhere
in the vacinity... ;-)  I tried to setup a piece of junk system someone
gave my grandmother, but I don't even want to talk about how
horribly that went... ;-)  I really hate dealing with hardware...
Especially old, slow, worn-out, non-functional hardware... ;-/  But,
strangely, that was the most exciting part of my 'vacation' (if you
can call several days stuck in a back-woods mountain town full
of ignorant rednecks a vacation, anyway)... ;-)

Re: Gone for a couple weeks...

I love playing around with old hardware, at least if nothing else is to be done anyway. I gather old stuff from my friends and use it to tune up my old systems. So I have a collection of working computers ranging from a Amd486/133 (64MB), some Pentiums 133/200(128MB) as well as a K6-300(256MB), a K6-450(384MB) up to my main working platforms a Amd1400(512MB) and a 1GB XP3000+. It's great to have some systems for the server stuff to test on that I actually can max out, or some systems that still work when it gets really hot like last year, with over 40 degree in my room only the old 200MHz Pentium was still fit to get me into the net...

Re: Gone for a couple weeks...

Hey Nope, we are suddenly site admins! No idea what advantages that gives us, but we'll find out. ;)

Though I wonder what a site admin is, it isn't a moderator, nor an administrator, does this mean we are some rare hidden species?

Re: Gone for a couple weeks...

:)
It's just a ranking. It is supposed to show new ones that we usually know
what we talk about and that we were around for a longer time.

Hmm, on another page I am "Nope, the Conner slayer!"...

Re: Gone for a couple weeks...

Isn't that what the post count and join date are about?

Anyway, no matter what I am now, I feel honoured to be a site admin. :)

Re: Gone for a couple weeks...

Yes, a special species indeed...  You join the ranks of such
crazed lunatics as Loco, Michael, Vic, and myself... ;-)  And, just
as Vic recruited us 3 to help him do the dirty work around here,
so we're now recruiting you to help US... ;-)  (Uzume is also
included, but he doesn't seem to be around at the moment...  But,
then the same goes for Michael, so a rarely present admin isn't
really anything new... ;-))

You should notice you now have access to a lot more forums
than normal mortals... ;-)  The only one of real interest is the
"Moderator General Discussion" one, which we occassionally
use to discuss various site issues amongst ourselves...  Also,
you have the power to delete/move posts, ban users, etc...
Don't go too overboard with your new powers, though... ;-)  But,
if you see something you think really needs to be done, feel free
to do it...

Also, something we keep meaning to do, but none of us ever
found much time for, is to occasionally move/copy certain topics
from the general "Networking" forum into the "Unix Socket FAQ"
forum, if it seemed like an important and frequently asked enough
topic to belong there...  Don't worry if you never get around to
doing such a thing, either; we certainly haven't, so we're not going
to complain too much... ;-)  But, if you feel the desire to do so
someday, you have the power to do it...

Re: Gone for a couple weeks...

No Rob, actually I haven't anything changed since before. I can't see the
moderator discussion thingy and I can't edit/move/delete/ban anything. :?:

Re: Gone for a couple weeks...

Nope, no such nice and shiny features here, just the plain old site with as only change that my avatar became "Site Admin". Also if we would be really moderators then our name would be green in the "online users" list, which also isn't the case. So I'm pretty sure we're something else than you think you made us...

Re: Gone for a couple weeks...

Hmmmm...  Odd...  I don't know phpBB well enough to know WTF
else needs to be changed aside from your ranks to make you
'true' admins...  I'll look around, as I'm sure Loco will as well...

Re: Gone for a couple weeks...

You guys are now officially "gods" on this forum.  You have as much power as you can get without direct access to the box.  If you need anything done there then you'll have to let me know.  Enjoy!

Re: Gone for a couple weeks...

8O Now I've seen it all.

I surely didn't expect that many empty boards hanging around behind the scenes.
